Etiquette and Protocol in Argentina by Mabel di Michele - MdM Ceremonial

The world of Argentine social and business etiquette is based on the commonly accepted styles of the Western world, keeping some of its considerations. This is due to the significant influence of Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Greek, and neighbouring European countries’ immigrants that have populated Argentina, along with the indigenous peoples, over the centuries.

  • Spanish is the primary language spoken in Argentina; many Argentineans will also speak English, Italian or German.
  • Argentineans place a high value on personal relationships; hence Argentinean businesses are often relationship-driven hierarchies, but these hierarchies may not equal the actual internal structure of the company.
  • When communicating with Argentineans, it always is better to speak one-on-one, at meetings or by phone, rather than sending emails and reports, to create rapport and a strong working relationship.
  • Punctuality is not a priority for many Argentinians. They like to manage their business and social life weekly, day by day, rather than a month in advance. Argentinians  value flexibility and spontaneity.
    • Business lunches tend to last longer than usual, and it is even likely that the foreigner will be invited to a barbecue.
    • The business card is an informative element that does not receive special treatment. It can be kept in your pocket, and it is not frowned upon to make notations on a card.

  • As with most South Americans, informal greetings such as a handshake, eye contact and arm, or hand-holding, are common.  Standing close to others is not unusual.
  • As for table etiquette, the British style of food is used, even for meals.
  • Details are considered in giving gifts respecting cultures and ethnic groups. The gifts are opened at the moment of receiving them and in full view of everyone.
  • The Argentinian feels happy to receive and practice hospitality with those who visit the country for work or travelling.
  • Argentinians enjoy talking, and no offence is taken if you have a different opinion.  The key is to keep the conversation flowing positively.  If you are quiet, it may seem you are disinterested.
  • When paying at a restaurant, a service charge will be added; and tips are usually  10 - 15%.
Preservar el equilibrio justo y adecuado entre el respeto por sí mismo y el respeto hacia los demás, es la base de las normas de etiqueta.
